UEFA Champions League: Manchester City v Bayern Munich Odds and Betting Preview

MANCHESTER, UK - Manchester City face Bayern knowing that only a win will keep alive their faint hopes of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages. Still, Roberto Mancini's high-flyers are 4/6 favourites with Blue Square to take three points, which would leave them needing Napoli to draw or lose to bottom-placed Villarreal to progress.

Their German opponents are an appetising 5/1 with Victor Chandler to notch another European win while Totesport are going 7/2 that the match ends a draw.

Manchester City's superb domestic form has not been matched by results in the Champions League: they have managed just seven points from their five games in the group stages, and were swept aside by Bayern in this meeting's opposite fixture back in September. They need Villarreal - who are yet to secure a European point this campaign - to snatch something at home against Napoli, and Mancini has already conceded that his side have a '30% chance' of carrying on their Champions League adventure this season. The bookies agree: Bet365 are now quoting 5/2 that City make the knockout stages.

Bayern, meanwhile, are in the enviable position of not needing anything from this game after securing qualification two weeks ago with a comfortable 3-1 win over Villarreal. A string of impressive displays both in Europe and the Bundesliga has seen the league-leaders trimmed to 7/1 with Ladbrokes and Paddy Power to ultimately win the competition: the only teams with shorter odds are Barcelona and Real Madrid.

But the bookies fancy a home win here, and 1-0 to the Citizens is among the favoured scorelines at 15/2 with Unibet. A 2-0 home win can be backed at 8/1 with the same firm, while William Hill are offering 15/2 on 1-1. Better odds are available on winning away scores: a repeat 2-0 to the Munich heavyweights is as big as 33/1 with William Hill, and 2-1 is currently a 16/1 bet at Betfred.

Double result bettors can opt for City/City at 6/4 with Blue Square, although interestingly City have fallen behind in four of their five European games this season. A punt on City to be behind at the interval and pull off a comeback could well be worth a shout at 25/1 with Skybet as could draw/City, 4/1 at Unibet. For upset-hunters Bayern/Bayern might be tempting at 9/1 with Paddy Power.

City have been goal-crazy this season and are on course to break Chelsea's record league tally. Given Bayern's free-scoring capabilities we could well be in for a goalfest, and Ladbrokes and Paddy Power are going 7/4 that we see more than 3.5 strikes; over 4.5 is 4/1 with Unibet.

City's in form strikers top the table in the first goalscorer prices: Edin Dzeko is 5/1 favourite with Ladbrokes while Sergio Aguero is 11/2 with Betfred. Mario Gomez, who has 13 league goals for Bayern this season, looks better value though at a standout 7/1 with Ladbrokes.

The match kicks off at 1945 GMT and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

Ed The Head says:

Sure, Bayern will put out a weaker team and can afford to lose this match, but I don't know too many German teams that like getting beat. Plus, they're rather good.

You can take Bayern with a full goal start at 1.75 with Ladbrokes on the Asian Handicap, which would be my way to play it.

London Joe says:

Hard to bet on a team with nothing to play for. Just the sort of game I swerve as you don't know what Bayern's motivations are. I wouldn't want to be on City either but to me this is a bad game to invest on.
