IPSWICH, UK – League leaders West Ham travel to Portman Road this evening to face down-and-out Ipswich Town in the Championship. Sam Allardyce’s West Ham start the game as favourites to secure three points, and can currently be backed to do so at a market best of evens with Boylesports and Ladbrokes. For those punters anticipating a victory for Paul Jewell’s Tractor Boys, however, Ipswich are available at 3/1 (bet £1 to make £3 profit) with Coral, whilst the draw is on offer at 13/5 with Bet Victor.
West Ham have moved three points clear of title-rivals Southampton at the top of the Championship table, and clearly have automatic promotion to the top flight at the end of the season firmly in their sights. Big Sam’s side have won their last three matches on the trot, with victories over Coventry, Portsmouth and Nottingham Forest, and will look to extend their winning run away against Ipswich this evening. Ipswich have the leakiest defence in the league, having conceded 54 goals in their last 27 matches, and are currently on an abysmal streak of six Championship outings without a victory. Their dire run of form has seen the East Anglian club sink to 21st position in the table, only one place clear of the relegation zone, and Jewell knows that if his side don’t start winning games then they will be playing League One football next season.
In the over/under betting the top price on over 2.5 goals being scored is 19/20 with Ladbrokes, whilst under 2.5 goals is available at 10/11 with the same bookmakers. Considering the error-prone nature of Ipswich’s defence, the bookmakers are not deeming a goalless draw to be a likely outcome, and under 0.5 goals can therefore be backed at considerably longer odds of 11/1 with Stan James.
Carlton Cole has been West Ham’s most threatening striker so far this campaign, hitting the net eight times in the league. Unsurprisingly Cole starts today’s game as the favourite to open the scoring, and can currently be backed at 11/2 with Bet Victor. West Ham team mates John Carew and Sam Baldock are also deemed dangerous by the bookmakers, and are both available to score first at 6/1, with Skybet and Bet Victor respectively. Ipswich’s most dangerous striker, on the other hand, is thought to be Michael Chopra, who is available to break the deadlock at a market best of 7/1 with Ladbrokes.
West Ham are quoted at best odds of 11/5 with Blue Square to win the match after leading at half time, whilst draw/West Ham is on offer at 4/1 with Coral. Draw/Ipswich is available at 8/1 with Ladbrokes, whilst those punters who think that the home side will win the game after trailing at the interval can back West Ham/Ipswich at longer odds of 40/1 with Boylesports.
