Premier League Picks

Stephen Fry gives out his top picks from this weekend`s Premier League matches.

Hull City V Manchester United

And so last weekend saw United complete their third Premier league title in a row, by drawing 0-0 with Arsenal they gained the one point that they needed to see off their closest rivals Liverpool.

Hull City find themselves in 17th place and are in real danger of relegation if they do not win this game, that said if the bottom three clubs all fail to win (West Brom are already going down) then this result does not matter at all.

Hull`s biggest problem is that if Newcastle win and Hull do not then it`s curtains for their Premiership survival.

As already stated United have nothing to prove here, they are the Champions and are looking forwards to next week`s Champions League final, it all depends really on what team Sir Alex puts out, do you go for the three points in this match risking players who would want to be involved against Barcelona, or do you simple put out a second team, saving your first squad for the final.

I personally think that he will go for a mix of youth and experience, he can play some of the younger players and give a few senior players a run out at the same time.

The facts are that Hull need the points to guarantee Premiership football next season and United`s minds will be on other things, I am going to bet Hull here to gain the three points needed to stay up.

Aston Villa V Newcastle United

Villa are secure in the knowledge that they have gained European football next season, they are in 6th place currently and win/lose or draw this match and they will stay in 6th.

Newcastle on the other hand desperately need the three points in this game to try and escape relegation, they are currently third from bottom and are still playing some awful soccer against what should be considered lower level teams, they were beaten last weekend by Fulham (1-0) and this is the definitive game in Newcastle`s season.

I am never of the opinion that teams do not try simply because they have little to play for, but I will always back the team that needs the win over the team that really does not.

Back in Novembers reverse fixture Newcastle beat Villa 2-0 and a repeat of that result is what is needed here. Even a win may not be enough to keep them up but they will not know that until the final whistle.
