UEFA Cup 5 April

Joe Saumarez Smith's expert picks for UEFA Cup football games on 5th April 2007.

There is no standout bet tonight in the UEFA Cup but AZ Alkmaar are a touch of value off level handicap against Werder Bremen tonight. The German side are favourites to win the competition but they will find it tough tonight against an AZ side that are prolific goalscorers. The Dutch side have a great home record in European competitions – they have not lost in 29 matches – and they easily topped Group C in qualifying. Bremen are second in the Bundesliga and had a super tough Champions League group (Chelsea and Barcelona were not easy opponents) so they should be respected but they are much better at home than on the road and I feel the bookies are getting a little carried away by their reputation. Have a one point bet on AZ (level) at 1.95

Something happens to Spurs when they play in the UEFA Cup and they become a substantially better team than in the Premiership, or so it seems. They are going for a UEFA Cup record of nine consecutive wins in the competition but I doubt they will be going all out on the attack tonight in Seville. These two leg matches mean the onus is on the home side to have a decent lead coming out of the first leg, which means I expect Seville to play a far more attacking game than Spurs, who would be happy with a draw. At the prices Spurs are probably the value at 5.00 (4/1) with Bet365 to win the game but I am happy not to have a wager.

The other two games are definite no bet contest.
