Two of the weaker teams in the touney meet Thursday night. BetAsia has a pair of selections from the match.

Austria v Poland

Euro 2008 – Group B

Thursday 12 June, 7.45pm (UK time)

On the evidence of the opening round of matches these are two of the weakest sides at Euro 2008. Austria – 12/5 to win here – put up a spirited display against Croatia but still couldn’t find the net against one of the competition’s mid-ranking sides who were having an off-day. Poland were comprehensively outplayed (and beaten 2-0) by a Germany side that rarely had to break sweat to gain all three points.

Having both lost these two teams need a win to keep alive hopes of reaching the knock-out phase and it’s really difficult to identify differences between the sides in terms of skill. But attitude and atmosphere are a different matter altogether. Home side Austria were driven forward by fervent support in their first game and that could make all the difference here.

On the evidence of the first matches it’s bewildering to find the home team rank outsiders against a Polish side so it could be worth taking a chance with the hosts. Austria’s passionate home support, endeavour and never-say-die attitude could be enough to win what looks like a low key and low scoring encounter. Have a saver on a stalemate scoreline too.
