Aston Villa would have to inflict a first for the season on Everton to claim all three points – namely, win at Goodison Park while lying below them in the table. David Moyes’ side have lost on home soil to all members of the Big Four this season – but their record against sides beneath them is an excellent W10-D3-L0, exemplifying why Goodison Park is considered a fortress again. Everton have had a touch of trouble against mid-table teams – draws against Blackburn (1-1), West Ham (1-1) and Tottenham (0-0) are something of a worry – but victories at home to Portsmouth (3-1) and Manchester City (1-0) indicate Everton, who are 11/8, can win here.

Aston Villa – who are 9/4 to win – arrive with a decent away record but have failed to beat any of their toughest six opponents of the season. Confidence in the Villa ranks could hardly be higher after comprehensive victories over Derby (6-0) and Birmingham City (5-1) – but do thumpings of weaker teams improve a team’s chances of beating more accomplished opponents? We don’t think so, which is why we favour Everton to make full use of their Goodison fortress to take the points.
