EPL 9 & 10 May

Joe Saumarez Smith's expert picks for English Premier League games on 9th and 10th May 2007.

This was supposed to be ones of the games of the season and for a long time it looked like it would be the game that would have a major sway in deciding the Premiership title.

Instead we have two teams that have very little to play for, who are exhausted in the wake of their Champions League semi-final exit and whose eyes are on the FA Cup final. Some people will claim that winning this game will be an important morale booster for the side who wins ahead of their Wembley clash but I suspect both managers will be focussed on ensuring that their sides get through this without any injuries or unnecessary bookings. In fact, I would be surprised to see either side put out anything close to their first choice eleven in this contest. Chelsea has already indicated they plan to rest several of their top players and the question is whether Sir Alex will take the same opportunity.

I would guess he will not rest as many because this is the night that his side will be presented with the trophy and as a result all the most important players will have made the journey to Stamford Bridge. United will want to end the Premiership season in style and I think they will be more 'up' for this game than their opponents. This is hardly the stuff of maximum stakes but at the odds on offer United look very fair and a one point bet on Manchester United (+1/4) at 1.86 looks like a decent wager.

Spurs vs Blackburn

This is an important game for both sides as they both have a chance of securing UEFA Cup football next season and it is certain that both sides will be trying their hardest, unlike most of the teams in the Premiership who are simply seeing out the end of the season. The same fixture last season saw Spurs win 3-2 while the reverse fixture this season ended in a 1-1 draw. Prior to that the sides had drawn 0-0 in their last two games and there is definitely a history of these games being close affairs. On recent form Rovers are the slightly better team (five match form) but they look well matched and the value bet is in the draw. Have a one point bet on a draw at 3.90 with Betfair.
