CL 2 & 3 Oct

Joe Saumarez Smith's expert picks for UEFA Champions League games on 2nd and 3rd October 2007.

Tuesday’s games

Today sees a tough set of fixtures with lots of question marks over the teams involved. The only solid team looks to be Barcelona, who are in great form at the moment, but the ¾ goal handicap away from home is so high that I cannot get involved. Arsenal are a similar case in point – they are in great form and face an injury hit Steaua Bucharest but the handicap is far too high.

I normally like to side with Dynamo Kiev for their home games as the pitch is difficult for sides to play on and gives a huge home advantage. However Kiev have a new coach, Szabo, and they lost to the bottom side in the league at the weekend, plus they are missing Bangoura up front. So a game to avoid betting on.

CSKA Moscow also have a big home advantage but they are missing Carvalho and goalkeeper Akinfeev, who are basically the most important players in the side. Another team to avoid.

Both Inter and PSV have plenty of injuries, with the Italians missing most of their key players. But PSV are in not much better shape and should be avoided.

The other games are equally tricky and, with regret, I am going to make this a ‘no bet’ day.
