Bookies satisfied with Italian victory

Bookmakers across the world are celebrating following an Italian victory in the World Cup final. Not many punters backed Italy at the start of the tournament believing that domestic circumstances would get the better of them and, when they got to the final, a lot of money was put on France with the belief that it would be Zidane’s swansong.

The final itself was an intriguing game with a couple of memorable incidents including Zidane’s loss of control in extra-time. After ninety minutes the game was poised at 1-1 and so it remained after an additional half hour. Then the Italians stayed calm to pick up the trophy winning 5-3 on penalties.

It is a bit of a shame that the game will be remembered for Zidane’s head butt and even more of a shame that it is how he chose to end his career; however, the French team far surpassed expectations and Zidane has the consolation of being voted the Player of the Tournament (votes were cast at half time of the final).

Overall, the tournament was slightly disappointing when compared to previous World Cups. The event, as always, was spectacular and thoroughly enjoyable. However, at times the quality of the football was dubious and with ‘simulation’ so rife it could occasionally be annoying for the spectator.

Nevertheless, Italy are World Champions and for this they must be congratulated. By only conceding two goals in the entire tournament (1 an own goal, 1 a penalty), they deserve many plaudits. Their midfield was as strong as their defence and with a threatening attack they are certainly worthy winners.

As mentioned, their win came as a surprise to many, who chose not to back them because of the match fixing scandal that is ongoing back home. It seems as if this had the opposite affect though and galvanised the team. The result of this scandal is due soon and may see many of the wining team relegated, which could lead to English and Spanish clubs picking up a few bargains.

So, Italy are celebrating… for the time being.
