WC: Argentina new favourites after topping group

Argentina has overtaken Brazil as favourites to win the 2006 Fifa World Cup after drawing 0-0 with second-placed Holland. Argentina looked comfortable throughout and it looked as though they could have won if they had had to.

The battle between the South American teams has taken another turn with Argentina becoming favourites. However, these odds come before the Brazil game: Brazil face Japan tonight (22/06/06) and there is no doubt that a comfortable victory will see them regain their position at the top of the bookies’ pile.

Sky Bet have Argentina at 3.75 (11/4) and Brazil at 4.33 (100/30). The closeness of these odds certainty suggest that if any of Brazil’s big stars hit form tonight, they will be favourites again.

Nevertheless, Argentina deserves to be favourites after convincingly topping their group. They have been the team of the tournament so far and their 6-0 victory over Serbia & Montenegro was one of the best performances seen in any World Cup.

Now that Argentina have topped their group, it is possible to work out their likely route to the final. They play Mexico in the Round of 16, which shouldn’t be too much of a problem for them, but then face possible games against holders Germany, unpredictable England and the mighty Brazil.

Therefore, if they do win the competition, as many experts are predicting, they will have definitely deserved it but in a competition that is so open, the same can be said of any team.

I hope that you continue to enjoy what has so far been a tremendous tournament.
