Bookies suffer as favourites win

Bookmakers have reported a poor start to the World Cup as nine of the first 11 favourites have won their matches. Asian handicap results have been better for the bookies but most report a loss or only small profits after one-sixth of the tournament.

The results on Sunday and Monday were particularly bad with all six favourites in a row winning - this was good news for bettors who put the favourites into accumulators and bookies reported that lots of them did.

Bookies said that they were particularly upset to see Australia come back from 1-0 down against Japan with 10 minutes to go to win the game 3-1. Australia had been heavily supported by bettors who believed that their physical presence would see them through against a Japanese side that had plenty of skill but lacked bulk and height.
