England and Mexico shortened after World Cup draw

Bookies cut England to clear second favourites for World Cup 2006 after a favourable draw in the group stages.

Sven Goran Eriksson's side were drawn against Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago and Sweden at Friday's draw ceremony in Leipzig. England are now a top price of 8.00 (7/1) with Stan James, although most bookies are as short as 6.50 (11/2).

Bookies also reacted to the draw by cutting Brazil's price. They are now a top price of 4.20 with Sporting Odds but again most bookies are taking few chances and they are as short as 3.50 (5/2) with some companies.

Argentina, Italy and Holland all drifted in the betting after being handed tough draws relative to other fancied nations.

Of the outsiders Mexico were considered to have gained the best draw and are now top priced at 51.00 (50/1).
