Extraordinary results see English clubs make semi finals

Manchester United destroyed AS Roma 7-1 at Old Trafford while Chelsea came from one down to win 2-1 with an injury time winner at Valencia. The results mean it is almost certain three of the four clubs in the Champions League semi finals are English.

The Manchester United result was especially amazing as the Red Devils came into the game with a 2-1 deficit from the first leg and were playing one of the top three sides in Italy.

United led 3-0 after 20 minutes and 4-0 at half time and didn't ease up in the second half as they made it 8-3 on aggregate.

Chelsea went 1-0 down after 32 minutes to a Morientes goal but a scrappy equaliser on 52 minutes from Shevchenko levelled the match and in the first seconds of injury time Essien made it 2-1 to take the Blues into the semi-final and save Jose Mourinho's job at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea look almost certain to meet Liverpool in the semi final as they lead PSV 3-0 going into tomorrow's second leg.

Prior to the match Ladbrokes had offered odds of 3.50 (5/2) that all three British sides would make the semi final.

Manchester United are the 2.83 (15/8) favourites to win the Champions League, followed by Chelsea at 3.00 (2/1) and Liverpool at 3.75 (11/4). An all English final is a 1.57 (4/7) chance with Ladbrokes.

The results were bad news for the bookies who had seen plenty of wagers for the big name English clubs. Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg said his company was particularly worried about Chelsea going on to be European Champions: "We’ll be left with the blues if Chelsea win the trophy. It’ll be an absolute shocker."
