The race is on

Following today’s announcement of the sacking of Steve McClaren, there has been a great deal of speculation on who might land the England top job. Opinion varies from bookmaker to bookmaker but most will agree that Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neil is one of the front runners, he is currently on offer at a best price of 5.00 (4/1) with BetFred and Coral. Bet Asia takes a closer look at this highly volatile betting market.

Despite admitting that he could never manager another country, Jose Mourinho is also being backed and is currently on offer at 6.00 (5/1) with SportingBet.

Capello is the third favourtie, the former Real Madrid manager can be backed at 7.00 (6/1) with Coral.

Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison stated: "In truth the bigger punters have wanted to back Mourinho and the tenners and twenties are all for Capello."

Totesport are running a market on whether the next England manager will be English or not. They are offering 1.33 (1/3) that the new boss will be a foreigner and 3.25 (9/4) that an Englishman will be chosen.

Paul Petrie, Totesport spokesman commented, "Punters have clearly looked at the runners and don't think there is a serious English candidate. Certainly the early money has been for the Mourinho, O'Neill and Capello."
