Bye Bye McClaren?

Following England’s 3-2 loss to Croatia and failure to qualify for Euro 2008, Martin O'Neill is the 2.75 (7/4) favourite to take over from Steve McClaren as England manager, according to Ladbrokes. Bet Asia takes a closer look at the implications of this result and how the betting markets have reacted.

Despite refusing to resign as coach of the England team, the question is can McClaren really hold on to his job?

The Aston Villa boss has been steadily gambled in from 13.00 (12/1) to replace the doomed McClaren over the last four weeks. Jose Mourinho is 4.50 (7/2) for a return to London with Luiz Felipe Scolari 6.00 (5/1) to land the job he might have had last time round.

Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison said: "There's no point offering any prices on McClaren - he's history. But the dogs bark and the caravan moves on. It might be better to ask who is now daft enough to take the job."

Croatia were 8.00 (7/1) to win at Wembley before the game with the half-time/full-time result priced at 15.00 (14/1).

England's failure to qualify is likely to put a serious dent in the coffers of bookies next summer.

Hutchison added: "The Croatia win was a good one for the industry on the night, if finding a penny and losing a pound can be described as a good result."
