Carling Cup: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Manchester City Odds and Betting Preview

WOLVERHAMPTON, UK – Wolverhampton Wanderers face Manchester City in their eagerly anticipated Caring cup clash on Wednesday. City thrashed Premier League champions Manchester United 6-1 on Sunday, the heaviest defeat Sir Alex Ferguson has ever had to endure at home. It is unsurprising, therefore, that Mancini's side are favoured to secure another victory on Wednesday at 8/15 (bet £15 to make £8 profit) with Ladbrokes. For those punters expecting an upset, however, Wolves can be backed at 13/2 with Skybet, whilst the draw is on offer at 10/3 with William Hill.

Manchester City were surrounded by controversy in late September, after Argentine star Carlos Tevez refused to take to the field as a substitute in their Champion’s League match against Bayern Munich. One month on and Mancini's side have unquestionably put Carlos Tevez behind them, rocketing to a five point lead at the top of the Premier League with a colossal goal difference of 26. Wolverhampton, on the other hand, are floundering in sixteenth position, having lost five of their last six games. Mick McCarthy's side face a monumental challenge in their upcoming game.

In the over/under betting the top price on over 2.5 goals being scored is 4/6 with Bet365, whilst under 2.5 goals is on offer at 11/8 with Coral. The bookmakers are clearly not expecting a goalless draw, however, and punters can back under 0.5 goals at 14/1 with Victor Chandler.

Summer signing Sergio Aguero has been on ruthless form in and around the penalty area so far this season, netting nine league goals already for City. Unsurprisingly Aguero is favoured by the bookmakers to score the opening goal on Wednesday, and can be backed at best odds of 9/2 with Boylesports. Aguero's team mates Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko have also been dangerous up front this campaign – both scored twice against United on the weekend – and can both be backed at 4/1 with Ladbrokes to score first. Wolves' most dangerous striker is thought to be Steven Fletcher, who is available to break the deadlock at a longer 10/1 with Bet365.

Manchester City are quoted at best odds of 7/5 with Stan James to win the match after leading at half time, whilst draw/City is on offer at 7/2 with Ladbrokes. Draw/Wolves is available at 14/1 with Victor Chandler, whilst those punters who think that Wolves will fight back to win the match after trailing at half time can back City/Wolves at odds as long 60/1 with Paddy Power.

Ed The Head says:

Time to bet against Man City I feel. Mancini won't give a flying **** about this competition any more now that his side are challenging for the title and looking to go far in the Champions League. Wolves may also put out a weakened side given the Prem is their priority, however, so a long-shot bet is the best way to go I reckon. 60/1 on City leading at HT and Wolves winning at FT with Paddy Power would be my shout.

I like your thinking Ed. Man City won't care about the Carling Cup now they're in the Champions League this season. Last season they were knocked out by WBA away despite taking the lead in the first half - going on to conced two in the second half. Could history repeat itself against a team struggling for form who should be looking at the Carling Cup as realistic silverware? Good luck...
