Carling Cup: Aldershot Town v Manchester United Odds and Betting Preview

ALDERSHOT, ENGLAND – Following Sunday’s harrowing defeat to Manchester City, Man Utd are back in action this Tuesday against minnows Aldershot Town in the fourth round of the Carling Cup. Man Utd are, as expected, the overwhelming favourites for the fixture at a best price of 1/4 with Paddy Power. Aldershot are 14/1 to pull off a shock victory with William Hill whilst the draw is offered at 5/1 with Bet365.

After arch-rivals Manchester City condemned the Red Devils to their worst defeat at Old Trafford since 1955 at the weekend, Sir Alex Ferguson will be expecting a huge response from his troops, starting this Tuesday against Aldershot. Whilst the first team is likely to have to wait till Saturday to banish the demons from that horrific performance, the second-string is likely to be handed their chance to shine with the likes of Michael Owen, Dimitar Berbatov, Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison all set to feature for the visitors.

Aldershot Town currently sit 15th in League Two, a full 81 places below their opposition, and welcome the League Champions to the Recreation Ground off the back off a hugely impressive 5-2 victory over Dagenham & Redbridge at the weekend. The Shots will be dreaming of further embarrassing the League Champions and have pulled off one of the shocks off the tournament so far by knocking out Sam Allardyce’s West Ham.

In the correct score markets, 2-0 to Man Utd is the favoured scoreline with bookmakers at 6/1 with Bet365. 3-0 to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side is a 7/1 shot with Paddy Power whilst 4-0 to the visitors is a 11/1 chance at Coral. Aldershot are 35/1 to snatch a memorable 1-0 victory with Paddy Power whilst 2-1 to the hosts is 33/1 with Bet365. Ladbrokes offer 11/1 on the 1-1 draw.

Punters expecting a backlash from Sunday’s humiliation can back Man Utd to win by four or more goals at 5/1 with Bet365 or three or more at 21/20 with the same firm.

Michael Owen, who has scored six goals in six Carling Cup matches for United, is amongst the favourites to break the deadlock in the match at 5/1 with Betfred. Last season’s Premier League top scorer Dimitar Berbatov, is a 11/2 chance in the market with Bet365 whilst Irish international Darron Gibson is a 16/1 shot with Totesport. Danny Hylton is Aldershot’s top chance to open the scoring, at a best price of 12/1 at Paddy Power.

The Match Kicks off at 1945 BST and is live on Sky Sports 2.

I fancy a Fergie backlash for this game and Aldershot could be in big trouble! With a win 1/4 there's not any value there but I think there is some value in these:
- Man U win to nil - evens
- Man U win with -2 Asian Handicap - evens
- Michael Owen to score anytime - 5/4
Aldershot have been struggling at home recently and will get caught up in the occassion whilst United get down to the business of winning...

Hey Gilo. I think United -2 on the Asians is probably the best bet. Like you say, Utd are going to be out for revenge and even though they'll probably play a much-weakened side Fergie will want to win this at a canter. I think taking Utd on the Hang Cheng is better than to Nil as I have very little confidence in the Red Devils' defence at the mo.

Good point Ed. I remember now at Leeds Fergie played Berbatov at centre back just for a laugh! For the same odds, I'd feel more comfortable piling into the AH rather than nervously hoping Aldershot don't nick one through the whole game. I also fancy the 4/5 on offer with Will Hill on United scoring in the first 30 minutes - they are sure to come out of the blocks quickly to kill off the atmosphere.

Michael Owen's fine carling cup record continues, good price too at 5/4... and with Aldershot seemingly copying Craig Levein's 4-6-0 blueprint looks like all three are set to come in

So far, so good! :) Wish I'd stuck the bet on Owen when I first saw it but a win's a win so I can't complain. One more United goal will do nicely now...
