BERLIN - Bayern Munich head the bookmakers` betting lists for the 2010/11 season and are solid favourites at best odds of 4/7 (bet £7 to make £4 profit) with Boylesports. The Bavarians won the Bundesliga last season by five points from Schalke wth Werder Bremen a further four points back in third.
Bayern had been 8/11 favourites at the start of last season but bookmakers seem to believe that they will be even stronger this term, despite the fact that Arjen Robben may not be fully fit for much of the season and that Mark van Bommel is not getting any younger at 33. Bayern`s only major signing this season has been midfielder Toni Kroos who they have bought from Bayer Leverkusen and it is arguable that they are less superior to their Bundesliga rivals this season than last.
Second in the betting are Schalke at best odds of 9/1 with Stan James and they are followed by Werder Bremen at 12/1, also with Stan James. Fourth favourites are Hamburg at 18/1 with Bet 365 and then Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund are all 20/1 shots, with Coral, Bet 365 and Coral respectively. Stuttgart are 33/1 on Betfair.
Wolfsburg won the 2008/9 season when they were 33/1 chances and with Steve McClaren in charge this season they will fancy their chances of improving on their eight position last season, when it was clear that the dual demands of Champions League and Bundesliga football stretched their squad.
Stuttgart are an interesting side in that over the second half of last season they accumulated more points than any other team; they took 39 points from 17 games, ahead of Bayern`s 37 points and Bremen`s 33 points. If they can sustain that pace they have a very real chance of being serious Bundesliga contenders.
In relegation betting Bet 365 offer the best odds on all teams to go down. Frieburg are 11/10 favourites to be relegated, followed by Nurnberg at 6/4, St Pauli at 6/4, Hannover at 2/1, Kaiserslautern at 3/1, Cologne at 3/1 and Mainz at 3/1.
Pizarro is the bookies` favourite to be top Bundesliga goalscorer at 10/1 with Blue Square, followed by Kiessling at 11/1 with Blue Square, Barrios at 12/1 with Blue Square and Muller at 16/1 with Bet 365.
Bookmakers are paying one-third the odds on the first two places in the Bundesliga.
